Putting trim tabs on...cut off anode tabs?

Was wondering if others simply cut off the original anode tabs and mount trim tabs to the transom?
I saw a boat with 2-3" of anode tab left and the trim tab mounted on the remaining anode tab. Guy had to space the actuator out from the transom to correct the mount angle.
Seems like it would be an easily process to cut off the tabs.
Was thinking a process like the following:
1) Cut them off. Grind weld flat.
2) Strip mounting area to bare metal. Maintain anodes on new trim tabs. Align tabs to bottom of boat.
3) Drill holes through transom. Use an aluminum strip inside hull with 3M 5200 on it to seal holes. Bolt them on.
The rest is in the instructions.
