So one of my winter projects will be replacing the old gate valves with ball valves.
I have a few questions For those that have done this.
Can I just replace the valves or do I need to replace the thru-hulls as well?
What is a quality brand of ball valve?

I used a brass ball valve when I changed out my old gate valves
but if you what the best then go for it.

a bit of over kill.
These are stainless steel with latching lever handles.
I used my old thru-hulls as they were in good condition :D

I'm with you. I do not like gate valves. I think there only one left in my house--one I have not gotten around to replacing yet! I could not imagine keeping them in the boat.

In the "may as well" theme, while you are ordering parts and doing work you may want to consider this:

http://www.groco.net/SVC-MAN-07/Sec4/PDF/SSC.pdf

They are on the engine through hulls on my 28. To winterize I used the adapter to hook up a short section of garden hose that I inserted into a five gallon bucket fed by a garden hose and when it was clear the thermostat was open, I turned off the city water and substituted antifreeze. After the antifreeze was coming out the exhaust, I turned off the gas and started fogging the engine until it quit.

So for a few bucks more, you get this setup.

Of course if you replace the whole unit with bronze or stainless, you need to isolate it from the hull.

Good luck.

I'd use Marelon seacocks. You should never use gate valves or ball valves, only seacocks.
